Episode 203: Talking Potter with Katy McDaniel

Confession time, geeks: this episode has been in the queue for a while.

It’s been a hard winter. In addtion to record snowfall in on the Canadian prairies that has left me buried under a mountain of snow, the academic year has been very demanding. And there’s this pesky pandemic. we’re all still navigating. On top of all that, there were some audio challenges on my end that made editing take longer than usual. Days turned into weeks, weeks became months. You know how it goes.

But it’s finally ready and this was a fun conversation with Katy McDaniel, a professor of History  at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.. She's also the  editor of Virtual Dark Tourism: Ghost Roads as well as the co-editor of Harry Potter for Nerds II and she co-hosts the podcast,  Potterversity with Geek4 alumn, Emily Strand, which is part of the MuggleNet family,

Episode 202: Getting Ghosted with Margo MacDonald

On this SPOOKY episode of Geek 4, I'm talking to award-winning actor and playwright Margo MacDonald. Margo is also a long time ghost researcher and has been leading ghost tours for www.hauntedwalk.com

for almost 20 years. We discuss her fascination with ghosts and the supernatural; the relative who investigated The Fire-Spook of Caledonia Mills; and her own spooky encounters with the paranormal. We also talk about way people are drawn to scary stories, particularly stories that suggest life after death.

Episode 201 - Jessica Regan will KILL BILL!!!!

Guess who’s back?

After a long hiatus, I needed to pull out the big guns. And my guest for this episode is Jessica Regan.

You may know Jessica as the cocreator and cohost of excellent The Best Pick Podcast, along with Tom Salinksky and John Dorney, and her appearances on The Guilty Feminist. She's also an  award winning, RADA trained actor, who's appeared on stage in the West End, New York and  LA and on screen, with roles in BBC's hilarious Ill Behaviour, Call the Midwife,  Silent Witness and Doctors.  You may recognize her voice from the video games Witcher 3: Witch Hunt and Assassin's Creed Valhalla. And if all that wasn't impressive enough, she's recently added "author" to her resume. Best Pick: A Journey through Film History and the Academy Awards will be released this February from  Rowman and Littlefield.

What you might not know is that Jessica is also a MASSIVE Quentin Tarantino fan. In fact, when she was a guest on the quiz show Celebrity Mastermind, her  specialist subject was the films of Quentin Tarantino. I'm so pleased that she's be able to join me.

This was a wonderful conversation  that went in a number of different directions. Jessica is an absolute delight.

We talk about her history with Tarantino films and how it lead to her deep and abiding love for Tarantino regular, Tim Roth. We talk about Tarantino's relationships with actors as well as his complicated legacy including his treatment of Uma Thurman and his relationship with Harvey Weinstein. And Jessica tells me which of her co-hosts - Tom or John- is the most geeky.
